- When Not to Do This Ritual
The tender light of the Waxing Crescent calls us to gently release what no longer serves. This is not a forceful purge, but a mindful clearing of space for new growth. Like a seedling shedding its husk, we release with gratitude and allow for expansion.
What You’ll Need
- Small bowl of water โ Represents emotional flow and cleansing. Water gently carries away what we release. (zero-cost: Your tears)
- Bay leaf โ Associated with purification, release, and wish fulfillment. Its aroma aids in focusing intention. (zero-cost: A fallen leaf from outside)
- Pen or marker โ To write down what you’re releasing onto the bay leaf. (zero-cost: Any writing utensil)
- Fire-safe bowl or dish โ To safely burn the bay leaf, symbolizing the release of what you’ve written. (zero-cost: Sink)
- Lighter or matches โ To ignite the bay leaf and set your intention free. (zero-cost: Sunlight)
The Ritual โ 30-Minute Version
1. Prepare Your Space (5 minutes)
Even in a small space or on bedrest, create a sense of sacredness. Clear clutter from your immediate area. Open a window if possible, to allow for fresh air and energetic flow. If you are able to get out of bed, sit comfortably, or remain in a supported position if on bedrest.
2. Center Yourself (5 minutes)
Hold the bowl of water in your hands. Close your eyes and take three deep breaths, inhaling slowly and exhaling completely. With each exhale, imagine tension leaving your body. Feel your connection to the earth and the cosmos, even from your current location.
3. Identify What You Release (5 minutes)
Reflect on what you are ready to release. This could be a limiting belief, a past hurt, a habit, or anything that is hindering your growth. Be specific and honest with yourself. No need to judge, just observe. If you are unable to write, simply speak aloud what you are releasing.
4. Write and Imbue (5 minutes)
Using the pen, write what you’re releasing on the bay leaf. It can be a word, a short phrase, or a symbol. As you write, feel the weight of what you’re releasing transferring onto the leaf. Hold the leaf in your hands and infuse it with your intention to let go, visualizing it floating away from you.
5. Release (5 minutes)
Place the fire-safe bowl in a safe location. Light the bay leaf with the lighter or matches, and carefully place it in the bowl. As the leaf burns, visualize what you wrote transforming into smoke and rising into the air, carried away by the wind. If you cannot burn the leaf, tear it into small pieces and drop them into the bowl of water, visualizing them dissolving. Say aloud: “I release you with gratitude. I am open to new growth.” If you are unable to use fire, tear the leaf into tiny pieces and let the wind carry them from your hand. If you are in a shared space, do this discreetly or near a window.
6. Gratitude and Grounding (5 minutes)
Once the leaf has burned or dissolved, take a few moments to express gratitude for the lessons learned and the space created. Gently bring your awareness back to your body. Drink the water, if you used it, or dispose of it mindfully. Wiggle your fingers and toes, and gently stretch. Carry the energy of release into the rest of your day.
Short on Time? The 2-Minute Version
Hold water, breathe. Write on a leaf what you release. Burn (if safe) or tear the leaf. Visualize it dissolving or floating away. Say: “I release you with gratitude. I am open to new growth.” Give thanks.
Journal Prompts
- What small but significant step can I take today to release a pattern that no longer serves me?
- Where in my life am I holding onto something out of fear, rather than genuine need?
- How can I honor the lessons learned from what I am releasing, and integrate them into my future growth?
Crystal + Herb Pairing
Selenite paired with Garden Sage โ Selenite’s pure, high vibration assists in clearing stagnant energy and promoting a sense of peace. Garden sage supports purification and release, helping to gently sweep away what no longer serves. Together, they create a supportive environment for letting go and embracing new beginnings.
When Not to Do This Ritual
If you’re feeling intensely fragile or overwhelmed, this ritual might be too activating. Instead, focus on gentle self-soothing practices like a warm bath, listening to calming music, or spending time in nature (even if it’s just looking out a window).
