The waning gibbous moon invites us to reflect on the lessons learned throughout the lunar cycle. As the moon’s light diminishes, we can gently release what no longer serves us, transforming past experiences into potent wisdom and creating space for deep healing on emotional, physical, and ancestral levels.

What You’ll Need

  • A small bowl of water โ€” Represents emotional cleansing and the fluidity of healing. (zero-cost: A glass of water from the tap.)
  • Garden sage or dried rosemary โ€” For purification and clearing stagnant energy to promote healing. (zero-cost: Open a window to allow fresh air to circulate.)
  • A candle (white or blue) โ€” Represents hope, clarity, and the light of inner healing. (zero-cost: Use the light from your phone or a nearby lamp.)
  • Paper and pen โ€” For journaling and releasing thoughts and feelings. (zero-cost: Use a notes app on your phone or computer.)

1. Create Your Sacred Space (5 minutes)

Even in a small space, you can create a sacred atmosphere. If you are able to, clear a small area, like a bedside table. If you are in bed, arrange your pillows to create a comfortable and supportive space. Light your candle (or turn on your lamp) and take a few deep breaths to center yourself. If using garden sage, gently waft the smoke around your body and the space, visualizing it clearing away any negativity. If you cannot use smoke, visualize a cleansing light surrounding you.

2. Reflect on Lessons Learned (10 minutes)

Take your bowl of water and hold it in your hands. Close your eyes and reflect on the past lunar cycle. What challenges did you face? What did you learn about yourself? What patterns are you ready to release? As you reflect, visualize any pain, resentment, or limiting beliefs flowing into the water, being cleansed and transformed. You can speak these aloud, or just think on them.

3. Write a Letter of Release (10 minutes)

Take your pen and paper (or your notes app). Write a letter to yourself, to a specific person, or to your ancestors, expressing all the emotions you need to release in order to move forward in your healing journey. Don’t censor yourself; let the words flow freely. This is a safe space to express your truth. If you’re focusing on physical healing, write about the pain and limitations you’re experiencing, acknowledging them without judgment. If you’re focusing on ancestral healing, write about the patterns you’ve inherited and your desire to break free from them.

4. Release and Visualize (5 minutes)

When you’re finished writing, take a few deep breaths. Read the letter aloud, feeling the emotions as you speak the words. When you’re ready, release the letter. You can tear it into small pieces and dispose of them, burn it safely in your candle flame (if possible and safe), or simply close your eyes and visualize the words dissolving into light. Pour the bowl of water down the drain or outside, visualizing the negativity washing away with it. See yourself surrounded by a warm, healing light, feeling lighter, more peaceful, and more empowered.

Short on Time? The 2-Minute Version

Light a candle or lamp. Reflect on lessons of the past month: challenges faced, what you learned. Visualize pain/resentment flowing away. Write down emotions you need to release. Read it aloud. Release the letter (tear it up, burn it safely, or visualize it dissolving). Feel lighter, peaceful, empowered.

Journal Prompts

  1. What specific emotions or experiences are you ready to release in order to move forward on your healing journey?
  2. What wisdom have you gained from past challenges that can support your healing process?
  3. How can you honor your ancestors while also breaking free from inherited patterns that no longer serve you?

Crystal + Herb Pairing

Amethyst paired with Lavender โ€” Amethyst promotes emotional healing and spiritual growth, while lavender soothes the mind and body, creating a synergistic effect that supports deep relaxation and inner peace during the healing process.

When Not to Do This Ritual

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, depleted, or actively triggered, this ritual may be too intense. Instead, focus on gentle self-care practices like restorative yoga, mindful breathing, or spending time in nature to ground and regulate your nervous system.
