The last quarter moon is a time for letting go. As the moon wanes, we turn inward, acknowledging what has run its course. This ritual is designed to help you release old patterns, stagnant energy, and anything that’s holding you back from your fullest potential, even from bed.

What You’ll Need

  • Small bowl of water โ€” Represents the emotional body and helps to wash away what you’re releasing. (zero-cost: A cup of water)
  • Garden sage or rosemary sprig โ€” For cleansing and purification. Its scent helps clear stagnant energy. (zero-cost: A visualization of white light filling your space.)
  • Candle (any color) โ€” Represents your inner light and intention. (zero-cost: The light from your phone screen or a lamp.)
  • Paper and pen โ€” For writing down what you wish to release. (zero-cost: Mental note or voice recording on your phone.)

The Ritual โ€” 30-Minute Version

1. Prepare Your Space (5 minutes)

Even in a small space or from your bed, create a sacred atmosphere. Dim the lights, light your candle (or turn on your alternative light source), and place the bowl of water nearby. If using garden sage or rosemary, gently wave it around your body and the immediate area, visualizing the smoke carrying away any unwanted energy. If you are using the visualization, simply close your eyes and imagine white light surrounding you, cleansing and purifying.

2. Reflect and Write (10 minutes)

Take a few deep breaths to center yourself. Reflect on what you want to release. Consider old habits, limiting beliefs, past hurts, or anything that no longer serves you. On the paper, write down specific things you are ready to let go of. Be as detailed as possible. If you are using the mental note alternative, take a few minutes to list these things in your mind. If you are using the voice recording alternative, speak them aloud, clearly stating your intention to release them.

3. Water Cleansing (5 minutes)

Dip your fingers into the bowl of water. As you do, visualize the water absorbing the negative energy from your body and mind. Gently flick the water off your fingertips, imagining the water carrying away what you’ve written down (or spoken) into the earth to be composted. Repeat this several times, focusing on releasing with each flick.

4. Candle Release (5 minutes)

Hold the paper (or visualize the mental note) in your hands. Read aloud what you’ve written, acknowledging each item you’re releasing. As you read, feel the weight of these things lifting from your shoulders. When you’re ready, carefully burn the paper in the candle flame (if safe to do so, using a fire-safe bowl). Watch the smoke rise, carrying your releases into the universe. If burning isn’t possible, tear the paper into small pieces, visualizing each tear as a release. If you are using the mental note or voice recording alternative, simply close your eyes and visualize these things dissolving into the light.

5. Gratitude and Closing (5 minutes)

Take a few more deep breaths, feeling lighter and more free. Express gratitude to yourself for doing this work. Thank the moon for its guidance and support. If you feel called, speak an affirmation such as, “I release what no longer serves me, and I am open to new possibilities.” Blow out the candle (or turn off your alternative light source) and dispose of the water outside, returning it to the earth. If you cannot go outside, pour the water down the sink, visualizing it returning to the earth.

Short on Time? The 2-Minute Version

Dim light. Hold water. Reflect on what to release. Write it down. Dip fingers in water, flick away negativity. Read your list aloud. Burn or tear the paper, visualizing release. Affirm: ‘I release what no longer serves me.’ Dispose of water.

Journal Prompts

Amethyst paired with Lavender โ€” Amethyst supports emotional release and spiritual growth, while lavender promotes relaxation and a sense of calm during the letting-go process. Together, they create a gentle and supportive energy for releasing what no longer serves.

When Not to Do This Ritual

If you are feeling overwhelmed with grief or trauma, this ritual might be too intense. Instead, focus on gentle self-care practices like taking a warm bath, listening to calming music, or spending time in nature (even if it’s just looking out the window).
